Keller Connector, Issue 7: Veto Update

Keller Connector, Issue 7: Veto Update April 17, 2013 The 2013 Legislative Session came to a close last month, with many important bills passing through both chambers and landing on the Governor’s desk. This year, it was especially an honor to act as Senate Majority Whip. I enjoyed using the role to bring my colleagues together, finding points of compromise while keeping the focus and mome...Continue

Keller Connector, Issue 4

Two weeks remain of the Legislative Session and each day is critical for the passage of proposed legislation. 641 bills have been introduced in the Senate and 675 in the House, along with many memorials and resolutions. Considering that New Mexico continues to rank near the bottom in several evaluative categories, education remains at the top of much of the conversation and deliberation in the ...Continue

Keller Connector, Issue 3

We are now in the sixth week of the Legislative session and as always the pace is quickening as we try to solve some of the challenges facing New Mexicans in a short amount of time. The final day, March 16th, is just a few weeks away. Each Monday, the Senate and House Democratic caucuses come together for a joint press conference to highlight important issues before the Legislature. Last week...Continue

Keller Connector, Issue 2

KELLER CONNECTOR, Issue 2 February 2, 2013 The Roundhouse has been buzzing with activity since my last newsletter. One major reason is an enthusiasm many of us have to find solutions for some of the big challenges in our state. Unfortunately, New Mexico lags behind the country with respect to the economy and jobs and is facing many other urgent issues. Legislators feel that their constituents ...Continue

Keller Connector, Issue 1

Last week, Lt. Governor John Sanchez gaveled the Senate into order for the 2013 60-Day Legislative Session. I am both grateful and excited that the voters in District 17 (East Central Albuquerque and the International District) have sent me back to the Roundhouse for a second term as their Senator. And, I am very honored to be chosen by my colleagues to serve in the senate leadership in the ro...Continue

Missed Opportunity at Expo New Mexico

It has been 25 years since we’ve had the chance to redesign the State Fairgrounds (now officially known as Expo New Mexico). As the State Senator representing most of the surrounding area I know that the communities surrounding Expo New Mexico have repeatedly called for an opportunity to participate in a serious strategic plan for the development of the 250 acres in the middle of our city....Continue

Economic Development, Tax Policy and Our State Budget

As the 50th legislature convenes the halls are filled with all kinds of aphorisms about our state’s budget.  The usual dichotomy is between those who want to cut spending and how to raise revenues.  Underneath each option is a wide range of specific proposals, but there is another force at play driving our state’s budget, and our local economy, that until recently has seen little atte...Continue
